Who are the Melville Volunteers ?

    The Melville Volunteer Fire Department is made up of three Companies and a Rescue Squad with over 110 active members. We also sponsor a Junior program for those 14 - 18 years of age through Explorer Post 250.

    We are a group of men and women who volunteer to provide fire and emergency medical services to the community 24-hours a day, every day. We respond to over 2,400 calls per year in an area of 15 square miles with over 7,100 homes and 1,100 businesses.

    We are people like you - men and women of all ages and careers and we come from all walks of life. We are students, police officers, career firefighters, accountants, doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, bankers, mechanics and construction workers. We are people who will leave our homes and families on a moments notice to fight the menace of fire or to care for a sick or injured person.

Do you think you can meet these challenges ?

    Volunteering in the Melville Volunteer Fire Department requires dedication and commitment. You will be required to put in some long and hard hours. Emergencies do not care about time, temperature, birthdays or holidays. On some nights you will be asked to get out of a warm, comfortable bed and respond to a fire or other emergency. As a member you can expect to loose sleep, miss meals and push yourself to limits beyond what you thought you were capable of. It is a demanding task but it is one of the most rewarding things you can do… knowing that you helped make a difference.

    Members must be over 18-years old (14 for Juniors), in good health, a citizen of the United States, should live within the Melville Fire District and have a strong desire to serve the community. All candidates must pass a physical exam, background investigation and a drug test.

What do I get out of this ?

    When you become a member of the Melville Volunteer Fire Department you are automatically covered by Workers Compensation in the event of an injury during your volunteer duties. You are also covered by a life insurance policy and you become enrolled in the New York State Length of Service Award Program. We will provide you with uniforms, equipment, training and an annual physical. Additional benefits include the use of our fitness room and personal trainer, social activities, hospitalization benefits and the camaraderie of others who are dedicated to serving the community.
